TikTok Thumbnail Size and How to Save It

What the cover is, what size it has, and how to save it in full resolution

A TikTok cover is the still picture shown on profiles, in search results and when a video is shared. A full-screen 9:16 video has a cover around 1080 × 1920 pixels; a cover designed by the creator keeps its own shape, and older or smaller posts can have a smaller cover. Paste a video link into ReelTik and press Download to save Cover image in the largest size TikTok stores – nothing is enlarged and no watermark is added.

Size and aspect ratio of a TikTok cover

TikTok videos are made for a 9:16 screen, and the cover of such a video is the same portrait shape – usually around 1080 × 1920 pixels. Creators who upload a designed cover can use another ratio, and TikTok then stores and shows that image.

TikTok often keeps several resolutions of the same cover. The tool always returns the largest file it can read and never upscales: a small or old post simply has a smaller cover.

JPEG, WebP or AVIF

Most covers arrive as JPEG. When TikTok stores the cover as WebP or AVIF instead, you get that format and the file name ends accordingly; it is the same picture, only compressed differently.

Every modern browser can show all three formats. Older editing programs sometimes accept only JPEG – in that case convert the file once, or take the video frame with a screenshot-free tool.

The cover is not always the first frame

Before publishing, a creator can pick any moment of the video as the cover or upload a separate picture with text. That is why the cover may look different from the video's first second.

ReelTik returns the cover TikTok actually shows, which is what you see on the profile and in search – not a screenshot of the play button.

TikTok thumbnail questions

What size is a TikTok thumbnail?

For a full-screen 9:16 video it is usually around 1080 × 1920 pixels; creator-designed covers keep their own shape, and smaller posts can have smaller covers.

Why is my cover not 1080 × 1920?

The size depends on what TikTok stores for that post. We return the largest version that exists and never enlarge it.

In which format is the file saved?

Usually JPEG; sometimes WebP or AVIF. The extension of the downloaded file shows which one you got.

Can I save the cover without watermark?

Yes. The cover file has no TikTok logo and no username overlay.

Do photo posts have a cover as well?

Yes. A photo post or slideshow has a cover, and every image of the post is listed next to it.

Is saving a thumbnail free?

Yes. It is free and needs no account.
